The launch-performance of CANICHE #3 presented an original collaboration between artists Isaac Olvera and Elsa-Louise Manceaux, for which they used 250 OPEN COPIES of CANICHE to create a stage on the floor. The video ‘Fun is Messy’ made by artist Nora Turato, contributor to this issue, was also implemented in the staging of the event.
ARTISTS
Ana Navas (1984, Quito, Ecuador) is an Ecuadorian-Venezuelan visual artist, graduated in 2011 from the Karlsruhe Academy of Visual Arts under the tutelage of Franz Ackermann. From 2012 to 2014 he was a resident of the De Ateliers institution in Amsterdam. In 2014, he received a grant from the Baden-Württemberg Foundation, Germany, for young artists. He has been a participant in residency programs such as: National Fund for Culture and Arts of Mexico for artists from Ibero-America and Haiti (2011), Centro Européen d 'Actions Artistiques Contemporaines Strasbourg (2015), Artistic Creation Stays of the Ministry of Relations Exteriors of Mexico (2015), Goethe Institut Salvador da Bahia (2016) and Cité Internationale des Arts Paris (2017). His work has been widely exhibited in Latin America and Europe.
Carlos Amorales (1970, Mexico City) lives and works in Mexico City. His work focuses in the diverse forms in which we use language and its codes. He uses mediums of expression such as drawing, animation, sculpture and performance to name a few. In 2016, he was selected to represent the Mexican pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennial, with the project ‘Life in the Folds’.
Carlos Arias (1964, Santiago, Chile) is professor in the University of the Americas in Puebla since 1998. Alejandra Avilés (1989, Cajeme, Sonora, MX ) was part of the Educational Program of SOMA Mexico and the Saas-Fee Summer Institute of Art in Berlin. Her work has been exhibited individually at Bikini Wax Mexico City, TRAMA Guadalajara Jalisco and Casa de Cultura Hermosillo, Sonora. She has collective participation in Rosa Luxemburg-Platz, Casa del Lago de Chapultepec, Sinaloa Art Museum, Alameda Art Laboratory and Nuevo Leon Arts Center. She has been a beneficiary of FONCA and FECAS. She is currently a resident of Hangar in Barcelona, Spain.
Ana Bidart (1985, Montevideo, Uruguay) lives and works in Mexico City. He was part of the SOMA Educational Program (2013), Mexico City. In 2015 she participated in the CASA / Espacio en obra residence in Rosario, Argentina and in 2016 she was invited to develop a project in Casa Wabi, Oaxaca. Recent outstanding exhibitions: “How am I going to forget you?”, Galerie Perrotin, Paris; “2 bed / 1 bath, nice view,” solo exhibition, Josée Bienvenu Gallery, New York; among others.
Alicja Bielawska (1980, Warsaw, Poland) lives and works in Warsaw. She graduated of Fine Arts at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and Art History at the University of Warsaw. She works with drawings, sculptures and poetry. Recently she got interested in choreography. Her interest focuses on what happens to our memory after we are exposed to her work. She joined a residency program at the Akademie Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart (2014–15) and the Nida Art Colony, Lithuania (2016). In 2015 she was nominated for VIEWS 2015 – Deutsche Bank Award, co-organized by Zachęta – National Gallery of Art in Warsaw.
Erin Dieboll (1984, Massachussets, US) lives and works in New York. Last summer she participated in Container Residency 01, traveling onboard a container ship across the Pacific Ocean. She has been granted residencies at Headlands Center for the Arts, Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Kala Art Institute, Tsarino Bulgaria, the Vermont Studio Center, LMCC’s Swing Space on Governors Island and the Lower East Side Printshop. She received her BFA from Cooper Union.
Éléonore False (1987, Paris, France) is a graduate of the National Superior School of Fine Arts of Paris (2013), as well as the Olivier de Serres School in Paris (2008). Her practice focuses mainly on the manipulation of the images that he selects and works on different supports and techniques: printing, collage, ceramics, textiles. The arrangement of her work in space is decisive for the public projection, both of an intimate reality and of a new meaning referring to form.
Carolina Fusilier (1985, Buenos Aires, Argentina) graduated from the Universidad del Cine de Buenos Aires (2006–2009) where she studied animation and multimedia. In 2011 she completed the artists program at the Torcuato Di Tella University with the tutoring of Jorge Macchi. She later attended Soma (2016–2017) in Mexico, D.F. In parallel to her training and dedication to the visual arts, she has worked in the field of animation in audiovisual projects, in cinema and advertising since 2006. She received the Raul Urtasun – Francis Harley Scholarship for young Argentine artists to carry out a residency at The Banff Center, Canada during 2015.
Her work was part of several exhibitions in Argentina, Peru, Mexico and Canada. Some highlights are: Caribbean Blue or a dystopian passage (2015, The Banff Center, Canada), Arte Bienal de Lima (2014 Lima, Peru), Urge un fuego (2016, Galería Ladrón, México, DF). He made two solo shows in Buenos Aires, Argentina: Fenomeno (2014–La Fábrica) and Chasing a Giant Shadow (2009–Cobra Libros). She was selected for the Lucio Fontana II and III Edition Award (2013–2014), Itaú Award (2013), New Argentine Video Call (N.V.A.–2014) and ProyectoA Contest (2005–2006).
Diego Gamaliel (1992, Mexico City, MX ) studied at the National School of Plastic Arts ‘La Esmeralda’ in Mexico City. He is a member of the Abul Abbas magazine dedicated to drawing and writing. His work ranges from drawing to painting and the relationship between the two. He likes lines.
Alejandro Garcia Contreras (1982 Chiapas, Mexico) His artistic practice is characterized by the experimentation and dialogue between different materials and technical resources .Through his art projects, he explores topics inspired by contemporary pop culture, folklore, classical myths, occultism and religions. The theme of death, under its different forms, states and significations, is ubiquitous in his art practice.
Sofía Garfias was born in Mexico City in 1988. She obtained a degree in Communication from the Iberoamericana University. She later graduated from the One Year Certificate Program at the International Center of Photography in NY and from the SOMA Study Program in Mexico City. ‘Delayed Liberation’ was his first solo exhibition at the Galería Breve in 2015 (MX). Her work has been part of multiple group exhibitions in Mexico City, Illinois and NY, including ‘La Isla’ on the smaller island of the Bosque del Chapultepec lake. , ‘Artistic Police Investigation’ in Bikini Wax, ‘State’ at the Breve Gallery and ‘The View From Here to Here’ at the International Center of Photography in NY. She currently lives and works in Mexico City.
Irene Kopelman (1974, Córdoba, AR) is an artist based in Amsterdam whose work explores the relationship between science and art. Kopelman’s work marries the clinical distance of scientific observation with an almost spiritual reverence for landscape and the objects, large and small, that comprise it. Wonder in the face of nature’s indifference to human striving is nothing new, of course. Bergsonian notions of the sublime consumed the psyche of pre-modern Europe and colored much of the continent’s art and literature for decades. But much like the phenomenology of Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger, Kopelman’s work employs the otherness of nature to reveal something integral about the recesses of the individual self.
Eva-Fiore Kovacovsky (1980 in Bern, Switzerland, based in Berlin and Amsterdam) practice is centered around her personal experience of nature, especially concerning the meeting point of nature and culture. She studied Design at the Schule für Gestaltung in Basel and has a BA in Fine Arts / Photography from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. Her work has been shown in in group shows and solo exhibitions in Europe, Russia and the US.
Theo Michael: ‘These lines you gave me… Did I get the worst lines? I felt trapped in a universe with bizarre laws of nature, (not dissimilar to actual reality), that’s how this drawing came about. (Tried to make something out of a hopeless situation.)’
Kalle Mattsson (1979, Uppsala, Sweden) is a graphic designer and illustrator. He lived in Amsterdam for an incredibly long time, but eventually got over it, and now he's back in Stockholm. He's done diaper advertising and abstract art, and nowadays it seems like he's become some kind of graphic comedian, which he'd like to apologize for.
Jonathan Miralda Fuksman (1981, México City) studied at the San Carlos Academy (UNAM) and at the “National School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving”, ENPEG, “La Esmeralda”. He Lives and works in Mexico City. He paints, sculpts and engraves; individually and collectively. But he also would like to stop doing it and dedicate himself to music.
Adriana Minoliti (1980, Buenos Aires, Argentina) iinvestigates a possible combination between geometry and queer theories. In her body of work, geometry is the best tool to represent and imagine a trans-human utopia, within which gender theories can be applied to pictorial language and find new ways to experience the visual world. Minolity lives and works in Buenos Aires. Her exhibitions include: Aichi Triennial (Japan), Galerie Crèvecoeur (Paris), Agustina Ferreyra and Beta Local (Puerto Rico), Mercosur Biennial (Brazil), Brooklyn Museum (USA) and residences in Mexico, New York, London and France. She was awarded several Acquisition Awards, such as the Golden Bows Competition in Latin America, First Prize Biennial Museum of Bahía Blanca, First Prize in the National Central Bank Room.
Victoria Núñez Estrada was born in Mexico City in 1989. Her work develops around painting and drawing as her main working tools, which she inscribes in a conjunction of reflections on space; its relationship with the body and with the various social phenomena attached to that universe.
Lucie Pindat (1983, Paris, FR) is a graphic designer based in Paris. In 2006 she left for Amsterdam where she lived ten years, working as a designer at Vandejong Creative Agency. In the meantime, she co-founded the artist collective 1/2 with three other friends and published the eponymous publication, 1/2 Zine, an original limited edition artzine gathering drawings, photographs and collages.
Marie Quennessen (1933, Besançon, France) is a painter and drawer, she makes satirical caricatures and has portrayed the members of her family and the children of the town where she lives. As the grand-mother of the editor, her humor’s got the caniche spirit.
Melanie Smith (1965, Poole, UK) earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Reading. Since 1989 he lives and works in Mexico City, an experience that has greatly influenced his work since then. Its production is characterized by a certain rereading of the formal and aesthetic categories of the avant-garde, problematized in specific places and the horizon of heterotopias. In previous pieces, she illustrates the idiosyncrasies of crowds, chaos and aberrant forms on the limits of contemporary times. This is evident in videos such as ‘Estadio Azteca-Proeza Maleable’, Xilitla, 2010, Bulto 2011 and Elevador, 2012. Her current work is linked to a critical vision of modernity, the relationships between precariousness, life and forms of violence of contemporary industrial society. Her work has been exhibited in numerous national and international institutions: PS1, New York; MOMA, New York; UCLA Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; ICA, Boston; Tate Liverpool; Tate Modern, London; South London Gallery, London; CAMH, Houston; Milton Keynes Gallery, Milton Keynes; CCA, Vilnius; Museum Booijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam; Lima Art Museum; Tamayo Museum, University Museum of Contemporary Art (MUAC) and El Eco Experimental Museum, Mexico City; Monterrey Museum, among others. Erik Tlaseca (1989, Mexico City) was born in the contradictions of the peripheries of Mexico City. He studied for a degree in Visual and Plastic Arts at ENPEG “La Esmeralda”. He was a founding member of the Cooperativa Cráter Invertido and Aguamiel. He is currently the editor of the proto-cooperative editorial Zúngale COMIXXX.
Nora Turato (1991, Zagreb, Croatia) is a talking artist based in Amsterdam. She gleans language from everyday life in attempt to echo popular consciousness or now. Her notes are later deviated, distorted and used to construct dense orchestrated talks, verbal vomits.
Roberto Turnbull (1959, Mexico City) studied at the National School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving “La Esmeralda”, in Mexico, D.F. He has had countless group and individual exhibitions, including “Poaching”, retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City. He was a member of the National Creators System from 2002 to 2006, he obtained the Omnilife Prize in painting and graphics in 1998 and the Acquisition Prize at the Rufino Tamayo Biennial in 1998 and 1992. Previously, he was part of the Annual Painting Exhibition in Mexico City in the year of 1986.
Israel Urmeer (1993, Mexico City, MX ) studied the Bachelor of Visual Arts at the FAD (2011–2015), has attended seminars at the expanded Campus MUAC 2014–2016 and CENART. Among his main explorations are approaches that involve pictorial thinking in different media. His work has been presented individually and collectively at the MACG, Art Office, Incubarte, Artbarter, to name a few. In addition to his artistic work, he is Co-founder of GAMA (2014–2016), he is an active member of Biquini Wax EPS. He has written for the YEI-Megazine, P-100 and Mmmeta.file platforms.

Minolity lives and works in Buenos Aires. Her exhibitions include: Aichi Triennial (Japan), Galerie Crèvecoeur (Paris), Agustina Ferreyra and Beta Local (Puerto Rico), Mercosur Biennial (Brazil), Brooklyn Museum (USA) and residences in Mexico, New York, London and France. She was awarded several Acquisition Awards, such as the Golden Bows Competition in Latin America, First Prize Biennial Museum of Bahía Blanca, First Prize in the National Central Bank Room.
Victoria Núñez Estrada was born in Mexico City in 1989. Her work develops around painting and drawing as her main working tools, which she inscribes in a conjunction of reflections on space; its relationship with the body and with the various social phenomena attached to that universe.
Lucie Pindat (1983, Paris, FR) is a graphic designer based in Paris. In 2006 she left for Amsterdam where she lived ten years, working as a designer at Vandejong Creative Agency. In the meantime, she co-founded the artist collective 1/2 with three other friends and published the eponymous publication, 1/2 Zine, an original limited edition artzine gathering drawings, photographs and collages.
Marie Quennessen (1933, Besançon, France) is a painter and drawer, she makes satirical caricatures and has portrayed the members of her family and the children of the town where she lives. As the grand-mother of the editor, her humor’s got the caniche spirit.
Melanie Smith (1965, Poole, UK) earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Reading. Since 1989 he lives and works in Mexico City, an experience that has greatly influenced his work since then. Its production is characterized by a certain rereading of the formal and aesthetic categories of the avant-garde, problematized in specific places and the horizon of heterotopias. In previous pieces, she illustrates the idiosyncrasies of crowds, chaos and aberrant forms on the limits of contemporary times. This is evident in videos such as ‘Estadio Azteca-Proeza Maleable’, Xilitla, 2010, Bulto 2011 and Elevador, 2012. Her current work is linked to a critical vision of modernity, the relationships between precariousness, life and forms of violence of contemporary industrial society. Her work has been exhibited in numerous national and international institutions: PS1, New York; MOMA, New York; UCLA Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; ICA, Boston; Tate Liverpool; Tate Modern, London; South London Gallery, London; CAMH, Houston; Milton Keynes Gallery, Milton Keynes; CCA, Vilnius; Museum Booijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam; Lima Art Museum; Tamayo Museum, University Museum of Contemporary Art (MUAC) and El Eco Experimental Museum, Mexico City; Monterrey Museum, among others. In 2011 he was representative of the Mexican pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale. She is a member of the National System of Creators of FONCA, Mexico.
Erik Tlaseca (1989, Mexico City) was born in the contradictions of the peripheries of Mexico City. He studied for a degree in Visual and Plastic Arts at ENPEG “La Esmeralda”. He was a founding member of the Cooperativa Cráter Invertido and Aguamiel. He is currently the editor of the proto-cooperative editorial Zúngale COMIXXX.
Nora Turato (1991, Zagreb, Croatia) is a talking artist based in Amsterdam. She gleans language from everyday life in attempt to echo popular consciousness or now. Her notes are later deviated, distorted and used to construct dense orchestrated talks, verbal vomits.
Roberto Turnbull (1959, Mexico City) studied at the National School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving “La Esmeralda”, in Mexico, D.F. He has had countless group and individual exhibitions, including “Poaching”, retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City. He was a member of the National Creators System from 2002 to 2006, he obtained the Omnilife Prize in painting and graphics in 1998 and the Acquisition Prize at the Rufino Tamayo Biennial in 1998 and 1992. Previously, he was part of the Annual Painting Exhibition in Mexico City in the year of 1986.
Israel Urmeer (1993, Mexico City, MX ) studied the Bachelor of Visual Arts at the FAD (2011–2015), has attended seminars at the expanded Campus MUAC 2014–2016 and CENART. Among his main explorations are approaches that involve pictorial thinking in different media. His work has been presented individually and collectively at the MACG, Art Office, Incubarte, Artbarter, to name a few. In addition to his artistic work, he is Co-founder of GAMA (2014–2016), he is an active member of Biquini Wax EPS. He has written for the YEI-Megazine, P-100 and Mmmeta.file platforms.
